Energy Saving

Businesses

Fredville encourages energy-saving habits at businesses that fall under the oversight of the Environmental Services Department, such as restaurants and convenience stores.

Fred Connection Transit Service

The Fred Connection, the City's transit service for older adults and people with disabilities, relies on dispatch software to group and coordinate rides. Fewer vans travel around carrying a single passenger, which also cuts down on emissions.

Riders qualify if they are 60 or older or have a physical or mental disability.

Hybrid Vehicles

Fuel once ate up a big slice of the budget in Housing and Neighborhood Services (HNS), the City department that handles housing enforcement, but that is changing. The department's director at the time led a conservation push that replaced six staff vehicles with hybrid sedans that get about twice the mileage of the cars they replaced.

The director noted that the compact hybrids have trimmed the department's gasoline costs considerably while also being kinder to the environment.

Housing enforcement officers drive between 75 and 100 miles a day, so the department needed vehicles that were more practical and economical. At $4 per gallon, the full-size sedans used before cost an estimated $80 a week to fuel. The hybrids need only about $38 a week under the same conditions, roughly half as much.

Hybrids of this type, which run on a combination of gasoline and electric power, rank among the most fuel-efficient cars available nationwide.

The switch saves HNS about $2,100 per vehicle each year, or $12,600 across all six. The City bought the vehicles for $138,000 through a statewide cooperative purchasing program.

Methane as an Energy Source

The City is also studying whether naturally occurring methane gas could be captured and used for energy.

Timed Signals

Coordinated, timed traffic signals help keep vehicles flowing and reduce the time engines spend idling at red lights.

Windmills

Under the Unified Development Code, windmills are permitted on lots of two acres or more.
