Animal Bites or Scratches

In an emergency, call 911 any time, day or night.

Under state law, each bite must be reported to the city's Local Rabies Control Authority (LRCA). Fredville Animal Services serves as the LRCA for the city, and its officers look into each reported bite. Any contact that breaks the skin generally counts as a bite, so scratches are included. An investigation is not meant to punish the animal or its owner; its purpose is to make sure state law is followed and to lower the chance that the person bitten is exposed to rabies.

During an investigation, an Animal Services officer confirms that a bite happened, gathers as much information as possible about the animal and its owner, and arranges quarantine. Any dog or cat that bites a person must be quarantined and watched for signs of rabies. Quarantine means strict isolation at an approved facility under Texas Department of State Health Services guidelines, for at least 10 days from the date of the bite. The animal may stay with a private veterinarian approved by Fredville Animal Services or at the Fredville Paws Adoption Center. Quarantine protects the person who was bitten.

Dangerous Animals

Animal Services investigates reports of loose animals that attack people or pets without provocation, and sometimes animals that seem likely to attack. An attack inside a secure enclosure, such as the animal's own fenced yard, is not considered unprovoked. Under city ordinance, an animal declared dangerous may remain in Fredville only under very strict confinement rules and with liability insurance; some must be removed from the city or euthanized. To learn more or report a dangerous animal, call (555) 010-5898 to reach the Fredville Paws Adoption Center.
