Trapping Policies

Residents can rent humane animal traps from Fredville Animal Services.

Please read the Animal Trap Rental Agreement (PDF) before renting a trap.

Trapping Rules

  • You may set a trap Monday through Thursday, or late on Sunday evening. Traps may not be set on weekends or holidays.
  • Do not set traps in bad weather. That includes temperatures below 40°F or above 90°F, rain, and any time severe weather is in the forecast.
  • Check the trap every day. If you catch an animal, call Animal Services that same morning, or during business hours before 3 p.m.
  • Put the trap somewhere sheltered from harsh conditions and other dangers. An attic, shed, garage or the area beneath a sturdy structure is fine, but you must move the trap out of that space before Animal Services arrives to pick it up.
  • Keep the trap out of direct sunlight. The spot you choose must stay shaded all day.
  • Animal Services has only a LIMITED number of traps available to lend.
  • You must give Animal Services permission to come onto your property to collect the trapped animal and, if needed, the trap itself.
  • A trap exists to hold an animal safely until it can be moved somewhere else. Use one only as a last resort, and never in a way that causes the animal to suffer. Keeping a trapped animal in humane conditions until it is picked up IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Being trapped is already stressful, and pets or people bothering the animal, extreme heat or cold, or rain can add to that stress and leave the animal hurt or dead. Because you set the trap and kept the animal from leaving, its outcome is your responsibility. Someone whose careless trapping causes an animal to be injured or killed may face civil or criminal liability.
  • Pick a bait that appeals to the animal you are targeting but is less tempting to others. For some species, where the bait sits matters a great deal. If an animal is hesitant to go in, a small trail of food or scent leading into the trap can help. Position the bait so the animal cannot get at it from outside the trap.
