Residential Foundation Repair

When a Foundation Repair Permit Is Needed

Any foundation repair requires a permit. That covers leveling a house, adding or replacing piers or footings, and changing or altering any part of the floor system. The standards apply only to the portions of the foundation you actually work on; piers, beams and floor framing that are left alone do not have to be brought up to these requirements.

Step 1: Gather the Required Documents

Before a Residential Foundation Repair Permit can be issued, you will need:

  • A letter and plans stamped by a licensed engineer that show where the work will happen and state whether any water, sewer or gas lines affected by the repair must be tested
  • A separate permit for any repair to water, sewer or gas lines that is part of the job
  • The project address and the property's legal description
  • Contact details for the owner and for any contractor or architect
  • The intended use, the square footage and the size of the work area
  • The class of work, a description, the job valuation and the market value of the property

Step 2: Apply Online

Building permit applications are filed through the City of Fredville online permit portal. New users need a working email address to register, and setting up an account takes about five minutes.

After You Apply

Most applications are processed within 5 to 10 business days of submittal. Reviews can take longer when staff need corrections or more information from the applicant.
