When You Need a Mechanical Permit
Heating, cooling and duct work at a home all count as mechanical work, and each job needs a mechanical permit before it begins. The Building Inspections Division must approve that permit first.
Step 1. Gather the Required Information
Have these details ready before a residential mechanical permit can be issued:
- The property address and how the property is used
- Contact details for the owner and the contractor
- The kind of installation: new, remodel, repair or addition
- The mechanical permit category, such as air conditioning, a wall heater or a central heater
Step 2. Apply Online
Applications are filed through the city's online permitting portal. New users need a working email address to register, and setting up an account takes around five minutes.
What Happens Next
Most online applications are processed within 5 to 10 business days. Approval can take longer if staff need corrections or more information from you.
