Use this permit for residential work that is not covered by any other permit type on the Residential Permit page. Applications are submitted through the city's online permitting portal, and all work has to meet the codes and ordinances the city has adopted. If you plan to install an electric vehicle charger, read the city's EV Charging Station Guide (PDF) first.
Step 1. Review the Submittal Requirements
You will need the following before a Residential Miscellaneous Permit can be issued:
- Location: The property address must already exist in the permitting system. If you cannot find it, contact Building Inspections.
- Type: Give a short description of the work, with the square footage and valuation where they apply.
- Contacts: List everyone involved, such as the applicant, contractor, owner and architect. Applicants need a registered account on the online permitting portal, and the contractor must be registered with the city as a General Contractor.
- More information: Explain the work in greater detail, including general project information and any other relevant notes.
- Attachments: Because this permit covers many kinds of work, the plans you need depend on the scope of the project. Plans must show the location, scope and details clearly enough for staff to confirm the work meets every applicable code and ordinance. Common attachments include:
- A site plan, usually the survey you received when you bought the property or a drawing made to scale, with dimensions showing property lines, easements, streets and drives, and existing and proposed structures
- Architectural or structural drawings that show how the work will be built or installed
- Other plans or documents, such as shop drawings or installation instructions
Step 2. Apply Online
Submit your building permit application through the city's online permitting portal. First-time users need a valid email address to register, which takes about five minutes.
What Happens Next
Applications sent through the online portal are handled in the order they arrive. Each one goes to the departments that need to check it for code compliance.
The city works to finish each review within the timeline shown on the permit submittal. Building Inspections reviews generally take 5 to 14 business days, not counting holidays, depending on the project. How long it takes to get a permit overall depends on the permit type, which departments must review it, and how complete and accurate your documents are.

Inspections
- Every inspection is made under the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC), the Unified Development Code (UDC) and the city's Code of Ordinances.
- Do not continue work past any inspection point until that inspection has been approved (2021 IRC, Section R109.4).
- The permit holder or their agent is responsible for requesting each inspection through the online portal when the work is ready, and for giving inspectors access to the work.
- Beyond the inspections listed in IRC Sections R109.1.1 to R109.1.4, the division may make or require any other inspection needed to confirm compliance with the adopted codes and other laws the city enforces.
- Some inspections call for extra forms or reports. An inspection attachment guide (PDF) explains what may be needed.
- The Typical Residential Miscellaneous Inspections Guide (PDF) lists the inspections usually required for this permit.
