Residential Fencing

Fence Requirements for Homes

You need an approved building permit before replacing any fence. That covers swapping an old fence for a new one, replacing individual panel sections and putting up a new fence.

Fences and screening walls must be structurally sound and built from approved materials.

On residential property, fences may be made of wood, wood slats, masonry, chain link or wrought iron. R-panel, sheet metal and plywood may not be used.

Every fence has to stay weather-tight and be kept free of decay, damage and blight.

In residential zoning districts, a fence can be no taller than 3 feet in the front yard and no taller than 8 feet in the back yard.
