When a disaster strikes, emergency crews may not reach everyone right away, so plan for your household to get by on its own for at least 72 hours. Start your emergency kit with these essentials:
- Water: at least one gallon for each person, per day
- Food that will not spoil
- A weather radio
- A flashlight
- A first aid kit
- Sanitation supplies such as moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties
- A manual can opener
- Spare batteries
- Basic tools
- Some cash
- Personal items, including medications, important papers and pet food
For a full checklist of recommended supplies, see the online guide published by the regional emergency preparedness campaign.
