Tax Increment Financing TIFs

Tax increment financing, or TIF, gives a city a way to pay for public improvements inside a defined zone. The money comes from the growth in tax revenue that the zone itself generates. Cities usually use TIF to upgrade streets, utilities and other infrastructure so that existing businesses stay strong and new commercial investment is drawn to the area. In Texas, TIF zones are governed by Chapter 311 of the Tax Code.

TIF Board

A board of directors advises the City Council on how each zone should be run. By ordinance or resolution, the council may hand some of its own authority to the board, such as powers over the zone's administration, management and day-to-day operation, or over carrying out the zone's project plan.
