Who can apply
- At least 18 years old on the exam date
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license
- EMT certification is not required to apply. Recruits who do not have it earn it in the academy at no cost.
Pay and schedule
- Firefighter recruit, during the academy: $61,800 a year
- Firefighter after the academy: $66,400 a year, rising each year to $83,900 in year five
- Extra pay for paramedic certification and for bilingual skills
- Shift: 24 hours on, 48 hours off
