Starting in March 2024, Fredville homeowners and business owners may be eligible for lower insurance premiums when their policies renew, thanks to the Class 1 ISO rating earned by the Fredville Fire Department.
That top rating puts Fredville among the best 1% of communities in the nation for fire protection.
The Fredville Fire Chief called the rating an achievement for the whole city. According to the chief, a perfect score depends on every city department working together with the backing of the City Council, and firefighters and staff deserve special credit for their commitment to protecting Fredville's homes and businesses.
What Is an ISO Rating?
Most insurance companies rely on ISO ratings to judge risk and set premiums. The Insurance Services Office (ISO), a risk analysis firm serving the insurance industry, reviews more than 45,000 fire departments across the country about once every 10 years through its Public Protection Classification (PPC) program. Each department is graded on a 100-point scale and assigned a class from 1, the best, to 10.
How Fredville Improved
In 2008, Fredville scored 72.40 and was placed in Class 3. In its latest review, completed in late 2023, the score rose to 91.30, earning Class 1. Gains came in part from opening a new fire station, shifting resources to where they are needed most and training at a joint regional facility in Redstone. The department plans to keep working to hold on to its Class 1 rating.
