Water Wells

You need a Water Well Permit before drilling a new well or abandoning an existing one, whatever the reason. Any application to drill into the local aquifers must also be approved by the City Council.

Step 1: Check the Requirements

Read the Fredville Wellhead Protection Ordinance before you apply.

The permit application asks for:

  • If a contractor is doing the work, that contractor's name and state license number
  • Details about the well owner
  • Details about the well: its address, how many wells there are, depth, purpose, soil type, and the date it will be installed or abandoned
  • A map marking where each well is located

You must also:

  • Keep every well at least the minimum distance from on-site sewage facilities set by the state's on-site sewage rules (Chapter 285).
  • Supply any analytical data and reports the city asks for.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Complete the Water Well Permit Application (PDF) and drop it off in person at the Health and Environment office.
