Residential Deck Patio Porch

About This Permit

A deck, patio or porch is an outdoor floor system held up on at least two opposite sides by an attached structure or by posts, piers or other freestanding supports. Every residential deck, patio or porch needs a permit approved by the Building Inspections Division, no matter how small it is.

These structures must meet the residential standards in the city's Unified Development Code. The division also publishes plot plan requirements for residential decks, patios and porches.

Step 1: Gather the Requirements

Before the permit can be issued, you will need:

  • The project address and legal description
  • Information for the owner, contractor and/or architect
  • The square footage and the area of the work
  • The class and description of the work (including any electrical, plumbing or mechanical work), the project valuation and the market value of the property
  • A site plan showing:
    • Property lines
    • Any existing easements
    • Where the new structure will go
    • The dimensions of the structure
    • The distance to property lines and to other structures
  • Specifications, including building materials, height, length and width

Step 2: Apply Online

Building permit applications go through the city's online permitting portal. If you have not used the portal before, you will need a working email address to register, and creating an account takes about five minutes.

What Happens Next

Once your online application is in, plan on roughly 5 to 10 business days for processing. Approval can take longer if you need to make changes or supply more information.
