Commercial Interior Finish Out

Commercial Interior Finish-Out Permit

Any interior finish-out or upgrade inside an existing building needs a permit approved by the Building Inspections Division.

All nonresidential construction must meet the city's adopted codes: the 2021 editions of the International Building, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Energy Conservation and Residential Codes, along with the 2023 National Electrical Code. A complete list of requirements for nonresidential addition and construction permits is also available.

Step 1: Review the Requirements

Before an interior finish-out permit can be issued, you will need to provide:

  • The project address and its legal description
  • Contact information for the owner, contractor and/or architect
  • The intended use, the total square footage and the area affected by the work
  • The class of work with a description of the electrical, plumbing and mechanical scope, plus the project valuation and the market value of the property
  • A plot plan that shows off-street parking, the existing building and an address key
  • A floor plan labeling every room with its proposed use and square footage, and showing all exits
  • A wall section or specifications for interior partitions
  • Plans for electrical, plumbing and mechanical work
  • Note: Please review the installation requirements for unlisted equipment (PDF).

Step 2: Apply Online

Building permit applications are submitted through the city's online permit portal. New users need a valid email address to create an account, which takes about five minutes.

What Happens Next?

Once your online application is complete, permits are typically processed within 5 to 10 business days. Approval may take longer if the applicant needs to submit corrections or updated information.
