A carport is a roofed structure that gives vehicles, mostly cars, some shelter from rain and snow. Every residential carport, whatever its size, needs an approved permit from the Building Inspections Division.
Carports must also meet the residential carport standards in the city's Unified Development Code. Review the carport plot plan requirements (PDF) before you apply.
Step 1: Review the Requirements
Have the following ready before a carport permit can be issued:
- The project address and legal description
- Contact details for the owner, contractor and/or architect
- The square footage and area affected
- The class of work, a description of any electrical, plumbing or mechanical work, the project valuation and the property's market value
- A site plan that shows:
- Property lines
- Existing easements
- Where the carport will be built
- The structure's dimensions
- Distances to property lines and to other structures
- Specifications, including building materials, height, length and width
Step 2: Apply Online
Submit your building permit application through the city's online permitting portal. New users need a working email address to register, and creating an account takes about five minutes.
What Happens Next
Most online applications are processed within 5 to 10 business days. Review can take longer if the applicant needs to send corrections or more information.
