Who Needs a Food Handler Card?
State rules and Fredville's city code require every person who works in the food industry here to hold a food handler card or certificate from an accredited provider.
What Employers Must Do
Employers are responsible for making sure each worker earns a card or certificate no later than 60 days after being hired. Cards must be kept on site and shown to an inspector whenever asked. Letting staff work without one breaks both state law and the City Code of Ordinances.
How to Get a Card
The City offers its own food handler class, described in the steps below. You may instead take an approved course from any other accredited provider.
Step 1. Gather What You Need
The City's food handler application asks for:
- Your name, birth date and contact details
- Your employer's name
- A copy of your driver's license or another government-issued ID
- The class date you choose (see the food handler class schedule)
- The fee: $12 for a card or certificate, or $4 for a replacement card
Step 2. Register
Sign up for a food handler class by phone or in person with the Health and Environment Department.
- Phone: (555) 010-1261
- Location: City Hall, 100 Civic Center Drive, 2nd Floor, Fredville, TX 75999
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Step 3. Attend the Class
Plan to arrive 15 minutes before class begins, and bring your ID and the $12 fee.
What Happens Next?
You will receive your card or certificate on the same day you finish the class. Cards issued by the City of Fredville stay valid for two years from the date they are issued.
Other Ways to Get Certified
You may also complete food handler training through an accredited program other than the City's. The state health and human services agency publishes lists of approved providers:
- Accredited classroom food handler training programs
- Accredited online food handler training programs
A card or certificate earned from another accredited provider does not have to be exchanged for a City of Fredville card.
