One of the most effective ways to protect your home and possessions is to buy flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Typical homeowners policies do not pay for flood damage.
- A new flood policy usually takes effect 30 days after you buy it. Policies are sold by private insurance companies and agents, and the federal government backs the coverage.
- Federal mandatory purchase rules say that when a building sits in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), its owner has to carry flood insurance if their mortgage comes from a federally regulated lender. The rule reaches every kind of federal or federally related financial help for buildings in an SFHA, including loans and grants to buy, build, repair or improve public or private buildings, along with the machinery, equipment, fixtures and furnishings inside them.
- Properties outside high-risk flood zones need coverage too. Across the country, more than one in four buildings that flood each year belong to policyholders outside high-risk zones.
- Every property in the City of Fredville is eligible for flood insurance.
- Renters of houses or apartments can buy NFIP contents coverage to protect their personal belongings.
