Permits for Home Plumbing
Before any plumbing work starts on a home, the Building Inspections Division must approve a permit for it. When work goes ahead without one, the city may take enforcement action against the plumber and also against the business or owner who hired them.
Step 1: Gather What You Need
Have this information ready before a plumbing permit can be issued:
- A review of the Backflow Installation Procedures and Requirements (PDF, 108 KB)
- The property address and how the property is used
- Contact details for the owner and for the contractor
- The type of installation: new, remodel, repair or addition
- The kind of plumbing work, such as sewer lines, water service or backflow prevention devices
Step 2: Apply Online
Permit applications are filed through the city's online permitting portal. New users create an account with a working email address, which takes roughly five minutes.
What Happens Next
Once the online application is complete, most permits are processed within 5 to 10 business days. If the applicant has to supply corrections or more information, approval can take longer.
