Unused or expired medicines should never be flushed or poured down a drain, where they can end up in local creeks and lakes. Clearing old medications out of the house also helps prevent accidental poisonings and misuse. Fredville's Solid Waste department offers residents several safe ways to get rid of them.
Disposal Options
- Take-back events: the city and its partners hold medication collection days during the year. Watch the community calendar for upcoming dates.
- Pharmacy drop boxes: many local pharmacies have secure kiosks that accept prescription and over-the-counter medicines.
- Household trash, as a last resort: mix pills with something unappealing, such as used coffee grounds or cat litter, seal the mixture in a bag or container and place it in your regular garbage cart. Scratch out personal information on pill bottles before you throw them away.
Items Not Accepted
Needles, syringes and other sharps need special handling and should never go into a medication drop box. Call Solid Waste for advice on getting rid of sharps safely.
