The Exhibition Garden at the Kestrel Creek Nature Center is a joint project of the City of Fredville and Fredville ISD. An environmental science instructor based on site leads children through hands-on nature lessons, and every student in the district visits the garden at least once each school year.
Few cities in the region give residents a chance to earn composting certification, and Fredville is one of them. Graduates of that course, known as Master Composters, look after the garden alongside other city volunteers. They turn grass clippings and leaves into compost and use it to feed the butterfly, herb and vegetable beds.
Clean-Up Days
About twice a year, Master Composters and volunteers gather for a Clean-Up Day to ready the beds for spring. The work includes pulling weeds, tilling, spreading compost, setting out vegetable plants and covering ground that will be planted later. No gardening background is required. Many volunteers say they learn a surprising amount about themselves and the natural world simply by digging in, and everyone who helps goes home with a share of fresh, organic produce.
