Residential Fence

When a Permit Is Needed

Every residential fence in Fredville needs a permit approved by the Building Inspections Division. Fences must be built and kept in good repair under the Code of Ordinances, the International Property Maintenance Code, and the city's Unified Development Code.

Review Requirements

Applications are filed through the online permit portal. Have the following ready when you submit:

  1. Location: the property address. If the portal does not list your address, contact Building Inspections for help.
  2. Type of work: a short summary of the project, with square footage and valuation where they apply.
  3. Contacts: the people involved, such as the applicant, owner, contractor or architect. Applicants need their own portal account, and contractors must be registered with the city as general contractors before they can work in Fredville.
  4. More information: a fuller description of the job, for example "build a 6-foot board-on-board cedar fence on metal posts," plus a note on whether the lot sits on a corner.
  5. Attachments: plans must be uploaded with the application (see below).

Plans to Upload

  • Site plan: usually the survey you received when you bought the property, or a scaled drawing with dimensions showing property lines, easements, streets and driveways, and current and planned structures. Mark every new fence and show where it sits in relation to property lines, streets and buildings. A sample fence site plan is available from the division.
  • Architectural or structural plan: the design has to satisfy Fredville's Unified Development Code. A checklist of the city's fence rules and restrictions is available.
  • Drainage plan: on some projects, staff may ask for a drainage plan that shows the work meets the drainage standards in the Unified Development Code. A fence may never block or slow the flow of stormwater.
  • Other documents: anything else that helps the review, such as a survey when the fence line is uncertain or disputed.

Inspections

  • Inspections are carried out under the 2021 International Residential Code and the Unified Development Code.
  • Do not move past any inspection stage until that stage has been approved.
  • The permit holder or an agent must request each inspection through the online permit portal once the work is ready, and must give the inspector access to the site.
  • Beyond the standard inspections, Building Inspections may perform or require further inspections to confirm that the work meets adopted codes and other local rules.
  • Extra forms or reports may be requested during inspection. An inspection attachment guide is available, along with a list of the inspections a residential fence typically needs.
