Why a Permit May Be Required
Replacing windows or doors on a home can call for a permit for several reasons:
- The building code sets how much natural light and fresh air each living space must have, and it sets a minimum size for emergency escape openings in every bedroom.
- New windows and doors, and the openings that hold them, may not be smaller than the ones they replace.
- If the rough framing around an opening will change, or if new openings are cut into an existing outside wall, the work has to meet the current code.
Step 1. Gather What You Need
Before the permit can be issued, you will need to provide:
- The project address and its legal description
- Contact details for the owner, the contractor or both
- The square footage and the area affected
- Specifications for the new windows or doors
Step 2. Submit Online
Building permit applications are accepted through the City of Fredville's online permit portal. To register for the first time you will need a working email address, and creating the account takes about five minutes.
After You Apply
Once an online application is complete, review usually takes 5 to 10 business days. Approval can take longer if staff need corrections or more information from you.
