Fredville got Hispanic Heritage Month off to an early start on Thursday with a Mexican Independence Day celebration at Crestline Central.

Members of the Fredville Hispanic Chamber of Commerce marked the day at Paddle and Plate, where they were joined by Mayor Pro Tem Reuben Castillo and Council Members Carl Okafor, Marisol Reyes and Priya Natarajan.

Mexican Independence Day is observed on September 16 and opens Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15.

The evening featured traditional Mexican dance, food and live music, plus "El Grito de la Independencia," the yearly shout of "¡Viva México!" that recalls the beginning of Mexico's struggle for independence in 1810.

The city's celebration continues all month long with a full lineup of events.
