Commercial Mechanical Work

Before any commercial mechanical work begins, including heating, cooling or ductwork, the Building Inspections Division must approve a mechanical permit for the job.

Step 1: Check the Requirements

To be issued a mechanical work permit, you will need to provide:

  • The property address and how the property is used
  • Contact details for the owner and the contractor
  • The kind of installation: new, remodel, repair or addition
  • The mechanical permit category, such as air conditioning, a wall heater or a central heating system
  • Note: equipment that is not listed has separate installation requirements; the division can provide the handout.

Step 2: Apply Online

Submit your application through the city's online permitting portal. If you have never used it, set up an account with a working email address; registration takes roughly five minutes.

What Happens Next

Once your online application is complete, expect processing to take about 5 to 10 business days. Approval may take longer if the reviewer needs revisions or more information from you.
