When a Permit Is Needed

Any plumbing work on a commercial property must be covered by a permit approved by the Building Inspections Division. If work goes ahead without one, the city may take enforcement action against the plumber and against the business that hired them.

Step 1: Gather What You Need

Before a plumbing permit can be issued, have the following ready:

• A copy of the city's backflow prevention installation procedures and requirements, reviewed in advance (PDF, 108KB)
• The property address and how the property is used
• Contact details for the owner and the contractor
• The kind of installation: new, remodel, repair or addition
• The category of work, such as sewer lines, water service or backflow prevention devices

Step 2: Apply Online

Submit your application through the city's online permit portal. New users need a working email address to register, and setting up an account takes about five minutes.

What Happens Next

Most applications are processed within 5 to 10 business days of submission. Review can take longer if the applicant is asked to make corrections or supply more information.
