When a Permit Is Needed
Every roofing job on a commercial property needs an approved permit from the Building Inspections Division before work begins. Roofing work must meet, and be kept up to, the standards in the Unified Development Code, the International Property Maintenance Code and the city's Code of Ordinances.
Step 1: Gather What You Need
Have these items ready before the division can issue a commercial re-roof permit:
- The project address and its legal description
- Contact details for the owner, contractor and architect, as applicable
- How the building is used, plus its square footage and the roof area affected
- The class and description of the work, the job valuation and the property's market value
- Roofing material specifications (after you apply, staff will email you to request these)
- A completed Commercial Re-Roofing Questionnaire (PDF, 705 KB)
Step 2: Submit Your Application Online
Applications are filed through the city's online permitting portal. New users create an account with a valid email address, which takes roughly five minutes.
After You Apply
Most completed applications are reviewed within 5 to 10 business days. If staff need corrections or more information from you, approval can take longer.
