Monthly Health Spotlight: Breast Health Awareness
The American Cancer Society estimates that roughly one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in life. Knowing what is normal for your own body is one of the simplest ways to look after your breast health, and checking yourself regularly can help you spot changes sooner. Self-checks are not a substitute for mammograms or exams by a clinician, but they are a valuable part of staying aware.
How to do a self-exam at home:
- Look in a mirror. Stand with your arms down, then lift them overhead. Note any change in size, shape or symmetry, and watch for dimpling, swelling, redness or changes to the nipple.
- Feel while standing or in the shower. Using the flat pads of your three middle fingers, press with light, then medium, then firm pressure across the whole breast and up into the armpit, checking for lumps or anything that has changed.
- Feel while lying down. Place a pillow beneath one shoulder and rest that arm behind your head. With the opposite hand, use the same three finger pads and the same range of pressure to cover the breast and armpit, feeling for lumps, knots, discharge or anything new.
Most lumps turn out not to be cancer. Benign lumps can come from hormone shifts, an injury or a noncancerous breast condition. Learn the facts, keep up with recommended screenings and talk with your doctor about any concerns.

Mental Health: First-Responder Information Program
The Fredville Police Department runs a voluntary information-sharing program for residents with disabilities and their families. Participants can share details ahead of time so officers and other first responders have quick access to helpful information during a crisis. If someone cannot identify themselves, becomes lost or confused, or behaves in a way responders might misread, this information can be pulled up right away. Our first responders are committed to working alongside residents with disabilities and to having this support in place before it is needed.
Contact the police department to learn more.
Diabetes Prevention Program
The county health department offers PreventT2 classes, a lifestyle program for preventing type 2 diabetes that was developed through the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program.
In a PreventT2 group, a trained lifestyle coach works with you and your fellow participants to build the skills needed for lasting health changes, such as losing a modest amount of weight, moving more and handling stress. The group setting brings support from people facing the same challenges, so you can celebrate wins together and work through setbacks.
See the county's diabetes prevention program information for details.
