Leagues, clinics and classes from the Fredville Parks, Arts & Recreation Department teach the basics of each sport, its rules and good sportsmanship.

Playing a sport helps young people learn to work as a team and compete in a healthy way, and it builds strong, fit bodies as they grow up.

Adult Sports

Looking for some friendly competition? Round up friends, relatives or coworkers and join one of the leagues offered throughout the year. Register a full team, or sign up on your own and we will place you on one.

Youth Sports

Leagues and clinics for young athletes run throughout the year for a range of ages and skill levels.

Pickleball

Pickleball is growing in Fredville this spring, with lessons and open play at three indoor facilities for players of every age and ability. The sport borrows from tennis, badminton and table tennis, can be played as singles or doubles, and is easy to learn, which helps explain why it is catching on at recreation centers nationwide.

Ten Favorite Walking Spots

Walking is one of the simplest ways to improve your health, and Fredville offers plenty of good routes for walkers of every age and ability. Pack a water bottle, put on comfortable shoes and head out.

Greenlink Park: Wes Ardmore Park to Whitlock Park

2300 block of N. Wrenfield Parkway

Best for: new walkers, families and longer outings.

Pleasant scenery and a wide paved path make the trail at Wes Ardmore Park a favorite, and it continues all the way to Whitlock Park. Lighted loops in both parks let you keep your walk short, or you can take on the full route of about 4.5 miles.

Want to stay a while? Wes Ardmore Park also has a pond, a covered pavilion for picnics, softball fields and courts for volleyball, basketball and horseshoes.

Saddleback Trail

1980 N. Kestrel Line Road

Best for: experienced walkers, long distances, city explorers and nature lovers.

Starting at the Fredville Tourist Information Center, Saddleback Trail heads south beside Kestrel Line Road, bends east to follow the river and then turns north to link with the Kingfisher Trail system in neighboring Redstone, for a possible trip of roughly eight miles. It is a great pick for a vigorous workout with a city feel, yet the river views and natural scenery along the way make it just as appealing to nature lovers.

Heron Creek Linear Park

Seville Street at Wexford Boulevard

Best for: new walkers, longer outings, families and nature walks.

Heron Creek Forest, at Seville Street and Wexford Boulevard, is a county open space park that the city's Parks, Arts & Recreation Department looks after. The roughly 30-acre site has a linear trail running from Wrenfield Parkway to Wexford Boulevard, a great playground, a pavilion and plenty of natural open space.

The broad paved hike-and-bike path in Heron Creek Linear Park curves through several neighborhoods past mature trees, shady rest spots and benches, and walkers sometimes see the big turtles that live along the creek. Access points include Pembrook at Exford, Kenley Court, Haversham at Ainsley, Penrose at Kentmere, Bramble Hill, Ascot Court, Fairlie and Cadenza at Brannock. The path also links to Tanager Park in Cedar Bluff, so you can tell your friends you walked to the next city and back. Tanager Park has even more trails to explore once you arrive.

Bauer Park Trails on Bluestem Lake

3260 Hobson Road

Best for: experienced walkers, romantic strolls, nature walks and sunrise outings.

Natural-surface paths, lake views and varied terrain make the Bauer Park trails a favorite of seasoned walkers and nature fans. Come early to watch the sun come up over the water. The trails leave the city behind for savanna and woodland, so wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes and be ready for some wild scenery. The park charges an $8 entry fee per vehicle.

Willow Creek Park Trails on Bluestem Lake

Persimmon Creek Parkway near Lakecrest Parkway

Two natural-surface loops of about a mile each sit just west of where Lakecrest Parkway meets Persimmon Creek Parkway. The first starts from a small parking area on the north side of Persimmon Creek Parkway and winds through woods and prairie, far from city noise. The second loop, a bit farther north, fills with wildflowers from May to July, and its leaves turn bright shades in October and November.

The Track at South Fredville High School

330 W. Sentinel Trail

Best for: new walkers and anyone who likes to count laps.

The track at South Fredville High School may lack the scenery of other spots on this list, but it suits beginners, people easing back after an injury and anyone who enjoys stacking up laps. With no traffic, turns or trail junctions to watch for, it is also an easy place to walk and chat with a friend.

Fredville Outlet Center

3300 Interstate Frontage Road

Best for: beginners, slower walkers, indoor walkers and people watchers.

The outlet center offers both indoor and outdoor walking routes, so you can get your steps in and finish your shopping list on the same trip.

Stony Creek Park

Gullwing Drive at Tilden Road

Best for: walkers who want a great view.

Lake views and a "wilderness in the city" feel make Stony Creek Park a local favorite. Bring the family to shoot hoops on the lakeside basketball court or grill out at the pavilion after your walk. The park has about a mile and a half of paved trail plus close to two miles of semi-improved paths that lead down to the shoreline.

Neighborhood Strolls

Best for: new walkers, house hunters and anyone who prefers sidewalks.

Shopping for a home, or just enjoy a walk with a neighborly feel? Try one of these Fredville neighborhoods:

  • Hollins: Tidy lawns, flowers and shade trees make Hollins a pleasant place to wander, and its central spot between the interstate and Bluestem Lake makes it easy to pair your walk with another outing.
  • Settlers Ridge: Just off Saguaro Drive near Stony Creek, Settlers Ridge gives you a close look at one of the most affordable neighborhoods in town, and the trails at Stony Creek, Hackberry and Pike parks are a short detour away.
  • Lockwood: This north Fredville neighborhood off Wrenfield Parkway rewards walkers with older architecture and plenty of mature trees.
  • Pelican Point: Set along the Bluestem Lake shoreline near Marlowe Parkway, Pelican Point offers water views, modern master-planned homes and the occasional glimpse of wildlife in the greenbelt.

Downtown Fredville

Best for: walkers who like an easy pace, sightseers and history fans.

Exercise your body and your mind at the same time downtown, where a self-guided historical walking tour leads you past many of the city's landmarks.
