Batteries
(Alkaline, rechargeable, car batteries and more)
Alkaline batteries may go in the trash, although some battery drop-off programs take them along with rechargeables.
Rechargeable batteries are accepted at many battery specialty shops, electronics retailers, home improvement stores and office supply stores.
Battery specialty shops recycle car batteries, and many auto parts stores will take them too, sometimes in exchange for store credit. Call the store first to confirm.
Batteries are also accepted at the regional household hazardous waste collection center and at city HHW events. National battery recycling programs offer online drop-off locators as well.
Chemicals and Household Hazardous Waste
Most household chemicals can be taken to the regional household hazardous waste collection center (the regional HHW center). Fredville residents may drop off household hazardous waste there by showing proof that they live in the city, such as a current water bill or a valid driver's license.
The city also holds household hazardous waste (HHW) collection events at the Development Center several times a year. Most kinds of household waste are accepted. Space fills up, so please register in advance.
Christmas Trees
For two weeks after Christmas Day (December 25), real trees can be recycled for free at the landfill. Remove all ornaments, stands and plastic bags first. Artificial trees, and trees flocked with fake snow, cannot be recycled. Accepted trees are ground into mulch, which Fredville residents can pick up free at the landfill. Trees set out on your regular garbage day will be picked up, but they are handled as garbage rather than recycled.
Drop-off stations for trees that meet these guidelines:
- Ora Vance Recreation Center parking lot, 715 E. Fredville Road
- Linden Park parking lot, 4600 block of S. Tamberly Road
- Fredville Landfill, 2750 Ashcombe Boulevard
Electronics
Residents have two free ways to recycle electronics:
- Bring electronic waste to the Fredville Landfill, 2750 Ashcombe Boulevard, during regular hours.
- Bring it to one of the city's electronics recycling events, held at 100 Civic Center Drive several times a year. You must register, and spots are limited; sign up through the free electronics recycling event page or by phone at (555) 010-8098.
Light Bulbs
Regular incandescent bulbs can go in the trash.
Fluorescent bulbs are often accepted by local hardware and home improvement stores. You may also take them to the regional HHW center or to a city HHW event.
Metals
Industrial metals may be dropped at the landfill as part of a construction and demolition load, or taken to a scrap metal dealer for recycling.
Aluminum and tin cans belong in your curbside recycling cart.
Motor Oil
Many auto parts stores and auto service shops recycle used motor oil. Call ahead to make sure.
Pallets
Bring clean pallets to the landfill to be ground into mulch.
Plastic Bags and Film
Grocery bags and other plastic film packaging can often be returned to collection bins at grocery stores. Many grocers also sell reusable shopping bags.
Tires
The landfill accepts tires for a fee:
- Car and pickup tires: $2 each, up to 4 per visit
- Truck tires: $7 each, up to 2 per visit
- Tractor tires: $12 each, 1 per visit
Solid or pressed tires from forklifts, golf carts and lawn mowers cannot be recycled and may be put in the trash.
