Fire Hydrant Flushing

Why Is Water Running From a Fire Hydrant?

If you spot a hydrant opened up with water pouring into the street, City of Fredville crews are most likely flushing the water mains in your neighborhood. Flushing pushes water through the pipes fast enough to scour out sediment and replace water that has been sitting still, so the water that reaches your tap stays clean and of the best possible quality.

We understand that it can look like water is being wasted, and we appreciate the residents who call to let us know. Crews flush lines only when it is truly needed, and the practice is an essential part of protecting public health by keeping the drinking water supply safe.
