Fredville's outdoor warning sirens can sound for many kinds of emergencies, not only severe weather. They are designed to alert people who are outside and may not be audible inside buildings.
When?
The city operates 24 sirens placed across Fredville. They are activated for any of the following:
- A tornado warning from the National Weather Service, or a tornado, funnel cloud or rotation spotted by a trusted source
- Damaging winds over 70 mph
- Reported hail bigger than 1.75 inches, about the size of a golf ball
- A hazardous chemical spill
- Other state, national or local emergencies when warranted
Monthly test: weather permitting, the sirens are tested at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.
What do I do?
If you hear the sirens:
- Get indoors and take shelter right away.
- Find out what is happening by turning on local radio or TV news.
Emergency Notifications
Weather radio: To get warnings while you are indoors, the city recommends a NOAA All Hazards weather alert radio that has Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME). These radios cover every type of emergency, are sold at many stores for about $20 and up, and can be set to sound only for alerts that affect your area. Program the radio with the SAME codes for the counties that include Fredville; the National Weather Service radio page lists the code for each county.
Phone, text and email: AlertFV is the City of Fredville's emergency notification service. You pick the alerts you want and how they reach you. Register for AlertFV.
