Commercial Pool and Spa Permits
Building a new swimming pool or spa on a commercial property takes a permit approved by the Building Inspections Division.
Every nonresidential project has to meet the adopted codes: the 2021 editions of the ISPSC, IBC, IPC, IFGC, IMC, IEC and IRC, along with the 2023 NEC. More details are on the commercial construction information page.
Step 1: Gather What You Need
Before a commercial pool or spa permit can be issued, you will need to provide:
- The project address and its legal description
- Contact details for the owner, the contractor and any architect
- How the space will be used, plus the square footage and the area affected
- The class of work, a description of any electrical, plumbing or mechanical work, the project valuation and the property's market value
- A site plan that shows:
- The property lines
- Any easements already in place
- Where the new pool or spa will be built
- The measurements of the pool or spa
- How the site will drain
- Please note: unlisted equipment has its own installation requirements, described in a separate PDF handout.
Step 2: Submit Your Application Online
Permit applications are filed through the city's online permitting portal. New users sign up with a working email address, and creating an account takes only a few minutes.
What Happens Next
Most permits are processed within 5 to 10 business days of an online submission. Review can take longer if the applicant needs to send in corrections or more information.
