Fredville is a wonderful place to call home, and its natural floodplains are part of the reason. The undeveloped bottomlands along the Sorrel River, together with the city's wetlands, benefit both people and the environment.
Why Floodplains Matter
Local marshes and wetlands give fish and wildlife places to feed and raise their young, improve habitat for ducks and other waterfowl, and shelter rare and endangered species. Floodplains also provide open space, natural beauty, and room for both active recreation and quiet enjoyment. Just as important, they hold and carry floodwater, slow its movement and lower flood crests.
How the City Protects Them
- Fredville is a Water Wise community, with programs and ordinances that encourage residents to save water all year and to keep pollutants out of the soil and local waterways. Learn more about Water Wise.
- Public Works teaches residents how to keep grease and other clogs out of the sewer system through its Keep the Drain Clear campaign.
- Code Compliance officers keep an eye on activities that could harm the city's floodplains and waterways.
Keep Yards and Drains Clear
Brush, tree trimmings, junk, litter and other debris left lying in a yard can wash into storm drains and block natural channels. Getting rid of these items the right way helps keep water from spilling over creek banks in low-lying areas and along waterways. To make this easy, the City offers garbage and recycling collection, curbside brush pickup, and periodic drop-off events for household hazardous waste.
